Preventive Maintenance: Fluid Change-Flush-Clean

Make sure your vehicle starts and runs and keeps running by following the manufacturer’s recommended service interval for these preventive maintenance items:

  • Oil and Filter Change

  • Power Steering Flush

  • Transmission Service

  • Power Steering Flush

  • Brake Fluid Flush

  • Cooling Systems (Radiator/Antifreeze) Flush and Replace

How Often?

The recommended intervals for these fluid service vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, so it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance guide.

Why?

Regular oil changes, transmission fluid and coolant flushes are inexpensive compared to the cost of not doing them. Over time, dirt, dust, and airborne particles make their way into these fluids and can cause damage or, at least, premature wear to critical components.

For example, the radiator coolant circulates throughout the engine, and particles that find their way into the coolant can cause damage, such as scoring of the metal. Lubricating oil provides a thin coating that separates rapidly moving metal parts. Changing it regularly prevents it from accumulating too many contaminants that can cause excessive wear on these moving parts. Dirt in the transmission fluid can cause premature wear on the gears. Finally, clogged fuel injectors can adversely affect engine performance and fuel economy.
